Purpose and Scope
ViolinTuner.io is built for one job: helping a player bring four violin strings to the intended pitches without confusing them with guitar, viola, or generic chromatic-tuner conventions. The site covers standard G3–D4–A4–E5 tuning, alternate fiddle tunings, string frequencies, a safe tuning sequence, and practical problems such as slipping pegs or a fine tuner that has run out of travel.
What the Meter Reports
After microphone permission is granted, the meter estimates the strongest repeating frequency in the sound. It compares that estimate with the target string in the selected tuning and reports the difference in cents. The string controls are intentional: they let a player focus on the expected note instead of treating every nearby harmonic as an equally useful answer.
Method, Privacy, and Limits
Pitch estimation uses an autocorrelation-based detector in the browser. Audio is processed on the device and is not uploaded by the tuner. A bowed violin can still produce harmonics, bow noise, and vibrato that make the reading move; a steady open string, moderate bow speed, and a quiet room give a more useful measurement. The meter cannot inspect a bridge, peg, string, or instrument setup. If a peg will not turn normally, a string may be approaching the wrong octave, or the bridge is leaning, stop adjusting and ask a teacher or repair professional rather than forcing the hardware.
